거울 괴물의 집(the House of Mirrors)

Irene and her brave little puppy had passed two trials already.
Now, they walked into a deep valley where a strange fog covered everything.

In the middle of the mist stood a house made entirely of mirrors.

Its roof, walls, and door all shimmered like glass.
The sunlight bounced off it so brightly that Irene had to cover her eyes.

“Whatever’s inside… it must be the next challenge,” she whispered.

Carefully, Irene opened the door, and she and her puppy stepped inside.

The inside of the house was dizzying.

Wherever they looked, they saw dozens of reflections.
Irene was here, there, and over there too!
The puppy barked softly, confused.
Everything looked the same.

Suddenly—

CRASH!

One of the biggest mirrors shattered.
A cloud of dark smoke poured out, swirling and spinning.
The smoke shaped itself into a girl…

Not just any girl—
a girl who looked exactly like Irene.

But her eyes glowed red,
her face looked cold and tired,
and her voice was sharp like ice.

“You’re too small,” said the Mirror Monster.
“You’ll never win.
You’re all alone.”

“I’m not alone,” Irene said bravely. “I have—”

Before she could finish, the monster waved its hand.

All around them, the mirrors rippled and shimmered,
and suddenly—dozens of fake Irenes stepped out of the walls!

Some smiled, some cried, some laughed in strange ways.

Irene spun around.
She didn’t know which reflection was real,
and which one might attack.

“Shhhhhhink!”

Sharp glass shards flew through the air!
One sliced through her cloak.
Another slammed into her shield.

And then—
the real Mirror Monster appeared again,
its hands forming a giant glass spear made from mirrors.

It leapt toward Irene at full speed.

Irene froze.
She couldn’t move.

“Ahh—!”

Then—

Woosh!

Her puppy leapt into the air and pushed her aside!

“WOOF! WOOF!!”

The glass spear struck the floor where Irene had just stood.
A piece of it scratched the puppy’s leg.

“No!! Are you okay?!”

Irene picked the puppy up in her arms.
Its paw was hurt, but it licked her cheek and wagged its tail.

Irene’s eyes filled with tears.

“You… saved me.”

She stood up slowly, holding her puppy close.

“I’m not alone. I never was.
Because you’re here.”

She set the puppy down gently, took a deep breath,
and gripped her holy sword.

Irene charged toward the Mirror Monster,
dodging shards and illusions.

When she got close, she raised her sword and shouted:

“Light, show me the truth!”

She pressed the tip of her sword to the monster’s forehead.

FLASH!

A brilliant golden light exploded across the room.
The monster gasped, slowly melting into a soft glow.
Its sad eyes blinked once… then closed in peace.

The house fell silent.
The reflections disappeared.

In the center of the room, something shined—

A golden leaf-shaped key lay gently on the floor.

Irene walked over, picked it up, and turned to her puppy.

“You saved my life.
You were braver than anyone I know.”

The puppy tilted its head.

Irene smiled.

“I think… it’s time I gave you a name.
From now on, you’re Posil.
Because you’re soft and warm… and strong on the inside.”

“Woof!” barked Posil happily, tail wagging like a flag.

Irene picked Posil up and gave her a tight hug.

And so, the girl knight and her faithful companion
stepped out of the House of Mirrors,
hearts shining brighter than ever.

They were ready for whatever came next.

세 번째 장애물을 향해 걷던 아이린과 강아지는
짙은 안개가 깔린 골짜기 끝에서
이상한 집을 발견했어요.

그 집은 지붕도, 벽도, 문도 전부 반짝이는 거울로 되어 있었지요.
햇빛이 닿자 눈이 부실 정도로 반짝였고,
안은 전혀 보이지 않았어요.

“저 안에 뭐가 있는 걸까…”
아이린은 조심스럽게 손잡이를 잡고 문을 열었어요.
강아지는 그녀의 뒤를 조용히 따라 들어갔지요.

안으로 들어서자,
거울로 된 벽들이 사방에서 빛을 반사하며
두 친구의 모습이 수십 개로 나뉘어 보였어요.

아이린이 한 걸음 옮길 때마다,
거울 속의 ‘아이린’도 따라 움직였고,
강아지도 마치 열 마리가 된 것처럼 보였어요.

“여기 정말 이상한 곳이야… 조심하자.”

그때였어요.

쾅!

정면의 큰 거울이 산산이 부서지며,
그 안에서 검은 연기가 뿜어져 나왔어요.

연기는 천천히 사람 모양을 만들었고,
그 안에서 아이린과 똑같이 생긴 괴물이 나타났어요.

하지만 그 눈은 붉게 빛나며 차가웠고,
목소리는 낮고 무서웠어요.

“넌 너무 작아.
너 혼자서 이 모든 걸 할 수 있을 거라 생각해?”

거울 괴물은 두 팔을 뻗더니,
주변 거울들을 마법처럼 흔들었어요.

그리고 순식간에 사방 거울에서
가짜 아이린들이 튀어나오기 시작했어요.

아이린은 검을 빼들고 방어했지만,
어디서 공격이 들어올지 알 수가 없었어요.

“슉! 슉!”

날카로운 유리 조각들이 날아와,
하나는 아이린의 옷깃을 찢었고,
또 하나는 방패를 튕기고 튀었어요.

혼란스러운 공간에서
진짜 적이 어디 있는지 알 수 없었고,
아이린은 점점 벽 쪽으로 몰리게 되었어요.

그때—
거울 괴물이 아이린을 향해
거울 조각들을 모아 만든 창처럼 날카로운 빛 무기를 들고
날아올 듯 돌진해왔어요!

아이린은 방패로 막을 틈도 없이 얼어붙었어요.

“앗…!”

바로 그 순간!
작은 그림자가 번쩍—!

강아지가 뛰어올라 아이린을 옆으로 밀어냈어요.

“멍! 왈왈!!”

강아지는 아이린을 감싼 채
그녀 대신 유리 창의 일부를 맞고 바닥에 굴렀어요.

“안 돼, 괜찮아?!”

아이린은 다급히 달려가 강아지를 안았어요.
다리 한 쪽에 작은 상처가 나 있었지만,
강아지는 힘차게 꼬리를 흔들었어요.

아이린은 눈시울이 붉어졌어요.
“넌 나를 구했어… 정말 용감해…”

그 순간, 아이린의 마음속에서
무언가 따뜻한 힘이 솟아났어요.

“그래. 혼자라고 생각했던 건 내 착각이야.
난 혼자가 아냐.
넌 내 옆에 있어.”

아이린은 자리에서 일어나
거울 괴물의 정면을 바라봤어요.

그리고 큰 숨을 들이쉬고—
신성한 검을 들고 돌진했어요.

“빛이여, 나를 도와줘!”

검 끝이 괴물의 이마에 닿자,
눈부신 빛이 퍼졌고,
거울 괴물은 차츰 녹아내리듯 사라졌어요.

“……고마워.”

어느새 거울의 반짝임은 사라졌고,
방 한가운데엔 작은 황금빛 열쇠가 남아 있었어요.

아이린은 강아지를 꼭 안아주며 말했어요.

“너 없었으면 난 여기서 끝이었을 거야.
이제 정말 네 이름을 지어줄게.”

강아지는 아이린의 얼굴을 핥으며
“멍!” 하고 짖었어요.

아이린은 부드럽게 웃으며 말했어요.

“이제부터 넌 포실(Posil)이야.
포근하고, 사랑스럽고, 무엇보다…
진짜 용감한 친구니까.”

포실은 아이린의 무릎 위에서
행복한 듯 눈을 감았어요.

그리고 두 친구는
마법사의 성을 향해
조금 더 단단한 마음으로 다시 길을 나섰어요.
